The Glory Gala featuring Liza with a Z: 7 July 2017

As promised on the Facebook event page:
THE GLORY GALA Featuring Liza with a Z
The Glory is excited to announce its first ever ‘GLORY GALA’ in the beautifully restored Art Deco ballroom of Stoke Newington Town Hall on Friday 7th July
Following on from the amazing success of LIPSYNC1000, Jonny Woo will stage a re-enactment of the award-winning 1972 TV special Liza with a Z. Featuring 25 of the LIPSYNC1000 stars and some extra special guests, hosted by The Glory’s own John Sizzle, Liza Minnelli is getting a 21st Century makeover!
Alongside the ‘Liza’ centrepiece, The Glory Gala brings our favourite DJs and a selection of the new Drag King Stars from this year’s season of MAN UP! who will be showcased in the 'Glory Gentlemen’s Club"
The Glory Gala heralds our first celebration of Pride in London with a showcase of everything you love about The Glory. Spectacular, riotous, joyous cross-dressed party carnage. And with over 25 Liza Minnellis on show, what isn’t there to love?

/ Freida Slaves: one of the many facsimiles of Liza Minnelli! /

The Glory’s Pride 2017 Gala at Stoke Newington Town Hall on 7 July was a  truly glorious freaking tour de force! Or as my boyfriend Pal put it: amazing with a Z!

The evening incorporated a painstaking and imaginative recreation of Liza Minnelli’s 1972 TV special Liza with a Z musical number-by-musical number live onstage. Think of it as a night of 1001 Lizas: the huge cast (including Jonny Woo, Jayde Adams and La JohnJoseph) incorporated a disparate crew of multiple Minnellis of all genders and ethnicities, many of whom sporting luxuriant facial hair. (All of the surrounding wig emporiums from Dalston to Peckham must have sold out of short, perky Liza Minnelli-style pixie Dynel wigs).

/ Friend of Dorothy: effervescent emcee John Sizzle channeling Liza. Or is that mama Judy? /

While I treasure Minnelli as a kitsch figure of fun (she personifies pill-popping Valley of the Dolls-style smiling-through-your-tears glitzy old-school show biz corniness), I also mainly know her for her dysfunctional hot mess years: terrible films like Rent-a-Cop (1988) and Stepping Out (1991), her highly publicised stints in rehab, her mortifying short-lived marriage to the repellent David Gest and that befuddled, heavily-medicated episode where she hawked her own line of clothes on the Home Shopping Network. This night was a good reminder that in her seventies prime (around the time of Cabaret (1972) and when she was rubbing shoulders with the Warhol crowd at Studio 54 clad in head-to-toe Halston), Minnelli was a vivid, original and credible performer. (It’s got to be said, though: Pal and I watched Minnelli’s 1972 TV special in bed on the iPad the night after. In some cases, The Glory’s performers improved on the original!).

/ Above: Liza Minnelli Polaroid by Andy Warhol. Let's remember her this way /

/ Above: Jonny Woo and co recreating the "Ring Them Bells" musical number /

And – judging by the enthusiastic and diverse crowd’s hunger for jazz hands, sequins and tremulous emoting - Minnelli’s enduring status as a cherished gay icon is clearly unassailable. Anyway, everyone was great. Or “terrific” as Minnelli herself would say. Pal (who has a dance background) is ultra-critical of other dancers and even he said he was dazzled by how they’d nailed the slinkily sinuous Bob Fosse choreography.

Much as I loved Freida Slave’s interpretation of “Bye Bye Blackbird” (above) my highlight was the finale (which most definitely had nothing to do with the original Liza with a Z!): an anguished John Sizzle in a ratty fright wig, hospital gown and wheelchair seemingly in throes of a nervous breakdown and en route to rehab, tormented by dancers in David Gest wigs to a soundtrack of Liza belting out the 1989 Pet Shop Boys-produced synth-pop version of “Losing My Mind.”

/ Liza Minnelli in hell: John Sizzle tormented by the David Gest dancers. (These two pics swiped from Hackney Pride 365 Facebook page. Photos by Georgi Banks-Davies) /

I didn’t catch his name, but I also loved the queen with the tinsel wig and glitter-dusted mustache who performed a berserk lip-synch to the title song “Liza with a Z” in which Minnelli works herself up into an increasingly foaming-at-the-mouth frenzy explaining how to spell and pronounce her name. (When I was posting photos on my phone onto Facebook, auto-correct kept changing “Liza” to “Lisa” and I thought, “That’s exactly what Liza was protesting about!”). I don’t have any footage of him, but here is the original.

The aftermath: afterwards, drunk, we did precisely what Liza Minnelli herself would have done - rampaged through the streets of Stoke Newington on the hunt for fried chicken.

/ Chris and I, recreating that old Mickey Hargitay / Jayne Mansfield party trick /

/ I think I'll just leave this historic queer encounter here: John Waters and Liza Minnelli /

/ In closing: Liza Minnelli jumping (belatedly) on the disco bandwagon and absolutely slaughtering Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" in 1980 /

Lobotomy Room 21 March 2015 DJ Set List

/ The cover girl for the 21 March 2015 Lobotomy Room is the enigmatic Gertrude Forstner (stripper name: Lady Chinchilla). Between burlesque engagements (she was famous for her savage “cage act”) she was French sex kitten Brigitte Bardot's screen stand-in. Read more about Lady Chinchilla here /

As described in the Facebook events page:

Skulk in the depths of drunken depravity - at LOBOTOMY ROOM!

At last - a club night for the hillbilly beau monde! LOBOTOMY ROOM! Where sin lives! A punkabilly beer blast! A spectacle of decadence for the permissive Continentally-minded! A Mondo Trasho evening of Beat, Beat Beatsville Beatnik Rock’n’Roll! Rockabilly Psychosis! Wailing Rhythm and Blues! Twisted Tittyshakers! Punk Cretin Hops! Kitsch! Exotica! Curiosities and other Weird Shit! Think John Waters soundtracks, or Songs The Cramps Taught Us, hosted by Graham Russell (of Dr Sketchy and Cockabilly notoriety). Expect desperate stabs from the jukebox jungle! Savage rhythms to make you writhe and rock!

Gay greasers, cry-babies, prison wives and juvenile delinquents of all ages are welcome at LOBOTOMY ROOM! The semi-regular cult club night returns to the suitable environs of a low-ceilinged subterranean sex dungeon basement in Dalston (aka downstairs at Hysteria)! No musical guests this time – just me playing all your putrid vintage sleaze favourites until you’re losing your mind!

All this and admission is gratuit. (That’s French for FREE!)

Lobotomy Room: Faster. Further. Filthier.

A tawdry good time guaranteed!

/ This Lobotomy Room coincided with the birthday of "King of the Nudies", breast-fixated maverick film director Russ Meyer (21 March 1922 - 18 September 2004). I interpreted this as a good omen - and was right! Here is the delicious Lorna Maitland shakin' it in Meyer’s boob-tastic 1966 masturpiece (sic) Mondo Topless /

Wow! Saturday was dramatic! As revealed in my previous installment, the day started on a considerable high: seeing The Bob Mizer Foundation’s red hot vintage physique film The Golden Age of the American Male at The British Film Institute’s Flare Festival – and then encountering Fifties beefcake incarnate Tab Hunter (sigh!) backstage.

When I got home, I was puttering around getting ready to DJ later and gradually started feeling increasingly, dramatically rough. It kept getting worse until next thing I knew I was hugging the toilet bowl dry-heaving - and then projectile vomiting my lungs out! So odd, as I rarely get sick. (In retrospect I can confirm it was a sudden bout of the flu rather than food poisoning – Pal caught it within days!).

And what suck-y timing: not a great state to be in the night I had a Lobotomy Room scheduled! Cancelling wasn't an option – it would definitively burn a bridge with the venue if I cancelled with such short notice. I would never be able to approach Hysteria again! So – dashing to the bathroom to vomit every few minutes right up until I had to leave the house to head for Dalston - I sucked it up and carried on like normal. It was a long night and I was shivering and sweating profusely behind the DJ booth the whole time – but I stuck it out!

About the venue Hysteria: everyone seemed to love the ultra-minimalist soot-black basement. On the night it turned out the DJ booked for the bigger ground-level bar cancelled so I had the option of re-locating Lobotomy Room upstairs – but I infinitely preferred the dark and squalid S&M dungeon with exposed bricks illuminated by just a few red light bulbs – perfect for my purposes!

Hysteria was also my first ever venue with a proper late licence: on weekends it’s open until 3 am. That was definitely a learning curve. Between 10:30 pm until 12:30 the crowd was worryingly sparse and I was reconciling myself to a poorly attended night. But then at about 12:45 the place exploded with people and stayed frantically busy right up until chucking-out time. It was a big consolation to glance up and see throngs of people dancing! So the tenth-ever Lobotomy Room (and the first of 2015) was a painful night in some ways (by 3 am I was so drained I was virtually hallucinating), but ultimately successful.

18 February 2015 Cockabilly DJ Set List

/ “Hell-o? What’s that you say? COCKABILLY is returning to Shoreditch epicentre of gay bohemia The George & Dragon this Wednesday night? Our asses are there!” /

As I wrote in the essential Beige website on the lead-up to the 18 February 2015 Cockabilly:

Drag a comb through your quiff, swallow a fistful of bop pills and rock around the cock – at Cockabilly!

After a long hiatus, London’s only regular queer rockabilly night returns on Wednesday 18 February 2015 to the louche surroundings of The George & Dragon in Shoreditch.

Gay greasers, cry-babies, prison wives, juvenile delinquents of all ages and international sex kittens of all genders are welcome at Cockabilly - freaking out the squares since 2008!

Featuring DJs Mal Practice, Graham Russell (Lobotomy Room) and Emma Peters (Twat Boutique) spinning all your rancid vintage sleaze classicks!

Admission: Free!

8 pm - midnight

 photo Cockabilly_Feb15_zps6cbfaeaf.png

This was the first Cockabilly since September 2014 and Mal, Emma and I were freaking salivating to get our asses back behind that familiar George & Dragon mezzanine DJ booth.

My DJ set was heavily inspired by Scorpio Rising (1963), the homoerotic / occult biker underground art movie by His Satanic Majesty, Kenneth Anger - but when are they not?! That film is a sacred text to me!

So as well as the usual rockabilly psychosis, desperate rhythm and blues and sleazy bump’n’grind tittyshaker instrumentals, I threw in a clutch of the deliriously kitsch songs Anger featured in Scorpio Rising (like Ricky Nelson’s “Fools Rush In”, Elvis Presley’s “Devil in Disguise”, “Party Lights” by Claudine Clark, “Heatwave” by Martha and The Vandellas).

The surprise hit of the night was “Party Lights.” While I doubt anyone there was already familiar with this pretty obscure 1962 Top Five single, people suddenly jumped up to dance, unable to resist Claudine Clark’s sassy siren call. In “Party Lights”, Clark (a talented rhythm and blues starlet who wrote the track herself) belts-out the lament of a teenager grounded in her bedroom, yearning to join her friends at the raucous party across the street. (“They’re doing the twist / the fish / the mashed potato too / I’m here lookin’ at you” she wails, distraught, at her mother).

I’m allergic to Motown. There - I said it. With the exception of The Supremes, for me the whole Motown canon is overly familiar, synonymous with baby boomer nostalgia and too omnipresent in naff romantic comedies and beer, fried chicken and jeans commercials. Give me frantic, greasy unvarnished rhythm and blues in the vein of Ike and Tina, Esquerita or Andre Williams over Motown any day. But I was feeling generous, hence “Heatwave.” It is after all included in Scorpio Rising and how can anyone not love Martha Reeves’ impassioned wail?

If you read blogs like mine on blogger.com, you’re probably aware of Google’s recently announced abrupt, puritanical and draconian new policy about “adult content.” While my blog is hardly a “porn site”, it does have vintage atomic-era beefcake and cheesecake nudie cutie pin-up photos liberally scattered throughout that might well make a Sunday school teacher blush. These soft-core pics are pretty much all approximately fifty years old and tame by today’s standards - but obviously there isn't much scope for debating nuances with a faceless and soulless mega-corporation like Google and strictly speaking they are “graphic nude images.” Obviously this raises fuzzy issues of what’s “porn” and what’s erotica or artistic. (Apparently “artistic” is OK). These images were lovingly chosen by me, part of my vintage sleaze mid-century rock'n'roll aesthetic and integral to the stories they illustrate - so I’m opting not to comb through years worth of posts and deleting them. Somehow I've sailed under Google’s radar up to this point. (From anecdotal evidence, they are definitely singling out queer bloggers. Some of my favourite bloggers have understandably already deleted their blogs on here and re-located to tumblr or Wordpress - but those sites are hosted by Yahoo, another mega-corporation who might well cave in and follow in Google’s twitchy footsteps over the next few years). Anyway, if my blog suddenly vanishes from your feed or Google searches, it’s because it’s been arbitrarily re-set from “public” to “private” by the Google overlords. When that happens I’ll figure out what to do next.

Lobotomy Room 27 December 2014 featuring Jane Ruby

From the Facebook events page:

Escape the boredom that imprisons us all – at LOBOTOMY ROOM!
Frug, twist, watusi and monkey away your post-Christmas / pre-New Year’s Eve ennui - with the throbbing excitement of Lobotomy Room at East London boîte de nuit Paper Dress Vintage!

Lobotomy Room – a punkabilly beer blast! A sensual and depraved spectacle of decadence for the permissive Continentally-minded! A Mondo Trasho evening of Beat, Beat Beatsville Beatnik Rock’n’Roll! Rockabilly Psychosis! Wailing Rhythm and Blues! Twisted Tittyshakers! Punk Cretin Hops! Kitsch! Exotica! Curiosities and other Weird Shit! Think John Waters soundtracks, or Songs The Cramps Taught Us, hosted by DJ Graham Russell (of Dr Sketchy and Cockabilly notoriety). Expect desperate stabs from the jukebox jungle! Savage rhythms to make you writhe and rock!
Musical guest is JANE RUBY - the bluesy chantoosie who purrs and belts in a voice of pure pink cashmere. Perhaps best-known as the hour glass-contoured frontwoman of South London’s now-defunct voodoobilly band Naked Ruby throughout the 2000s, Ruby then sang and played guitar in all-girl surf punk outfit The Deptford Beach Babes – and now she’s seducing audiences with her new one-woman solo act. Ruby’s songs evoke visions of Ann-Margret in her Kitten with a Whip prime twisting frantically to Link Wray and are informed by her chequered past. Hailing from the wastelands of Adelaide, Australia has left the devilish red-haired singer a life-long glamour junkie, something Ruby indulged via her stints as a former nudie cutie artist’s model, dancer (Can-Can, flamenco and belly) and cocktail lounge jazz diva covering Billie Holiday and Nina Simone standards (an apprenticeship that still lingers in her femme fatale vocal antics). Ruby’s lyrics are sometimes spun from her real-life debauched alcohol-fuelled Janis Joplin-esque misadventures and sometimes are Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!-style revenge fantasies (assuming her songs about killing men are not based on firsthand experience). Blues, flamenco-tinged rock’n’roll and dirty stories are assured. If we’re lucky Ruby might even throw in a spot of belly-dancing!All this and admission is gratuit. (That’s French for FREE!)

Lobotomy Room – a tawdry good time guaranteed!

To paraphrase The Ramones: there was no stoppin’ the cretins from hoppin’ – at the 27 December 2014 LOBOTOMY ROOM!

I had vowed to myself I would do one final (third) Lobotomy Room for 2014 – and I pulled it off! My expectations were realistic: this is the third time I've done a Lobotomy Room at Paper Dress Vintage on the weekend between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, so I knew already the streets of Shoreditch would be a desolate ghost town and loads of my friends would be out of town. But everything considered ... we did pretty damn well!

Swingin’ special musical guest red-headed blues mama Jane Ruby (an old friend of mine from way back in the nineties) certainly helped. A vision in vintage aquamarine sequins and working a towering tousled beehive ‘do, Ms Ruby cast a spell with her heavenly intonations, accompanying herself with just guitar on a beguiling mix of original material and inspired covers (including “I Put A Spell on You” and “These Boots Are Made for Walking”).  Kudos as well to Paper Dress Vintage’s unflappable bar manager Carla for literally keeping everyone intoxicated. But mainly thanks to the hip, good-natured, enthusiastic dancing crowd who were a pleasure to DJ for. They helped ensure Lobotomy Room ended 2014 on a high.

Who knows what 2015 holds in store for my fetid club night?
